Every blogger in Nigeria right now should accord Linda Ikeji a sizeable chunk of respect.
Why?
Well, she is no longer on the same level as any of us mortals. She has upgraded and now hangs in the same residential neighbourhood as the likes of billionaire businessman, Mike Adenuga.
Last week, news of Linda’s latest and most expensive acquisition yet – a mansion that costs more than N500 million in Banana Island – hit the
Internet, sparking all kinds of debate.
Linda Ikeji @lindaikeji
Lol. My house is not N450m...where did y'all get that from? It's over N500m. And thanks for all the kind words. Love to u all.
Hate her or love her, Linda Ikeji has done well for herself. How many people do you know that have N500 million to spend on a house? People were criticizing on Twitter and saying all sorts about whether she will be able to find someone to marry her amongst other things but is that the point here?
Blogging in Nigeria is not a venture that is as rewarding as it is in other countries in the world. Add the fact that no blogger is currently making the kind of money Linda is making and you will see why Linda deserves to be applauded. Whatever she did, or is doing, it’s working. That’s all that matters.
I myself have never been on Linda’s blog, but after the news broke, I checked it out and I wasn’t impressed. I expected to see a standard website with all the widgets and stuff like that. Then I heard that she doesn’t employ anyone and still does her posts by herself (wait, WHAT?!). Reconcile that with the fact that she just spent ‘over’ half a billion naira on a house and my disappointment was magnified exponentially.
But away from the fact that Linda could have invested in a thousand and one things that would make her even richer than she already is or redone her blog to at least reflect how much money she is making from it, this is a former model whose blog only really picked up in 2011, even though she had started since 2006.
That’s a gap of five years, and it’s no mean feat that she was able to stay faithful to her hustle. She stayed consistent and it reaping the reward of her perseverance today. She shouldn’t be knocked for that. Most people only know Linda Ikeji’s story post-2011, not before, and that’s why it baffles me when people start to talk like she owes them something.
Dear Linda, if you’re reading this, big ups to you for sticking to your hustle and making all that money. Whatever you have been doing, keep at it. That mansion may not have been the best idea, but please flourish. And please do something about your blog. Employ some new hands. Diversify your content. Do something different and teach the younger generation how to fish. Peace.
