Tottenham terminates Adebayor contract

Tottenham have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor to terminate the forward's contract with immediate effect.

The 31-year-old striker, who has previously played for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid, was not part of Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino's plans.

Adebayor caused a surprise on transfer deadline day by rejecting the opportunity to terminate his contract even after being told he had no future at the club, with some reports claiming the player needed a sign from God.

Tottenham's statement read: "We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club. We wish Emmanuel well for the future."

Adebayor, who arrived from Manchester City for £5m in 2012, had a year to run on his contract and had been seeking a £5m pay-off to end it early.

Tottenham have not disclosed the terms of the termination agreement.

Speaking earlier this week, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino said Adebayor was not "in my mind or in the plans for the future of Spurs".

West Ham had been keen to sign the former Arsenal and Real Madrid player during the summer transfer window but were put off by his high wage demands, as were Aston Villa, who enquired about a loan deal.

Adebayor spent a successful season on loan at Spurs from Manchester City in 2011-12, scoring 17 goals.

He managed 18 league goals in 47 league appearances after signing a permanent deal but featured just 17 times last season, having been granted two periods of compassionate leave for personal reasons.

Adebayor's opportunities were further limited after Spurs signed South Korea striker Son Heung-min for £22m in August. He is set to make his debut at Sunderland later on Sunday.

West Ham and Aston Villa had been amongst the clubs credited in an interest with Adebayor and Villa Park boss Tim Sherwood, who managed the Togo frontman in his own spell at Spurs, said this weekend he was still interested.

"I would not hesitate. If he had the desire to want to come and play football again, I would have taken him in a heartbeat," Sherwood said despite Adebayor's deadline-day decision.

"We still have to respect his decision, whatever he makes. It's his - I can't influence it."
